Public views of policing in England and Wales

The HMIC report says that 76% of people are satisfied with policing although perceptions vary across the country with those living in urban and rural areas and in affluent and deprived areas having differing views.

Section 3 of the report “Safety and security in your local area” will be of interest to ASB practitioners as it looks at the perception of crime and ASB in local areas with the following key findings:-

  • Around three quarters (76%) of all respondents are satisfied with their area, feel safe after dark and do not consider that crime or ASB is a big problem where they live.
  • Those living in more deprived neighbourhoods were more likely to feel unsafe and that crime and ASB was a big problem.
  • Nationally 62% feel that crime and ASB is not much of a problem with a further 10% believing it not a problem at all. However 25% say that it is a big problem in their area.
  • 71% have not noticed any changes in levels of crime and ASB over the past year but 15% feel that it is now more of a problem against only 7% who feel that it has improved.
